If you’re familiar with architecture, you may know that windows are often required room components as part of residential building code. But as a homeowner, you know they’re much more than a means of emergency exit—they’re the conduit for sunlight, breezes, and a view of the world outside your house.
However, windows, like everything else, do get worn out. Aside from the obvious (say, a window getting shattered by the neighbor kid’s baseball), here are some other signs new windows are a good investment:
- Pricey utility bills: If you’ve noticed your electric and/or gas bill seems unusually high, one factor may be your windows. Older or poorly installed windows don’t seal well, allowing heated or cooled air to escape and quickly negate whatever temperature you’re trying to achieve indoors.
- Sticking: Do you need to fight with a window every time you try to open or close it? Sometimes sticking windows can be fixed by cleaning and relubricating the jamb (which forms the vertical sides of the frame), but other times mechanisms within the window need to be replaced.
- Insects: Older windows with gaps in the sash, sill, and jamb can be a highway for insects to get into your home, especially those with wooden frames that are easy for bees, wasps, and ants to chew through. If you have repeated bug visitors, check to see if any of your windows might be the entryway—and if so, consider replacing them before pests can do further damage to surrounding exterior and interior areas.
